On Saturday, September 26, as part of Minnetonka’s Homecoming Weekend, Minnetonka Public Schools and the Minnetonka Alumni Association hosted their 17th annual Alumni Awards event at Minnetonka High School. The event took place from 10 a.m.–noon and included a complimentary brunch.
The Alumni Awards are a long-standing tradition that celebrates the remarkable accomplishments of Minnetonka alumni and former faculty. This year’s honorees were recognized for contributions spanning medicine, community service, education, athletics and public safety.
Receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award was Paul Huber, Class of 1973. Through his leadership of Huber Funeral Homes, Huber has supported Lake Minnetonka area families for more than four decades. His service extends to local organizations, youth programs and community events through volunteering and philanthropy.
Also receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award was Dr. Kerry Olsen, Class of 1968. A leading specialist in head and neck cancer surgery, Olsen advanced treatment, research and surgical education during his career at Mayo Clinic. His influence extends through the generations of physicians and surgeons he has mentored.
The recipient of the Distinguished Service Award was Charlotte Bell, Class of 1965. An artist and photographer, Bell has supported the women of Las Rancheritas in rural Mexico since 1999. By helping secure materials, organize exhibitions and connect artists with buyers, she has expanded economic and educational opportunities for women and their families.
Receiving the Young Alumni Achievement Award was Brooke (Wassenaar) Marren, Class of 2014. Through her work at Medtronic, Marren has combined engineering and healthcare to advance medical technology, including helping launch a clinical study focused on peripheral vascular health. She also mentors young people interested in STEM careers.
Inducted into the Skippers Hall of Fame was Janet (Harrington) Jopp, Class of 1961. Through the Girls’ Athletic Association, Jopp helped establish intramural sports opportunities for girls at Minnetonka. She also became the school’s first female student to earn a varsity letter for athletic achievement, helping pave the way for future generations.
The Alumni Association also honored former faculty members who inspired students to excel. John “Jack” Streed was posthumously inducted into the Faculty Hall of Fame. An English teacher remembered for his warmth and high expectations, Streed brought literature to life while helping students become thoughtful readers and confident writers.
Also inducted into the Faculty Hall of Fame was Loren Nelson. During his 34-year teaching career, Nelson helped students understand mathematics through practical applications and a belief in their potential. His dedication to mentorship, family outreach and literacy extended his impact beyond the classroom.
Scott Gerlicher, Class of 1986, was posthumously honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service. During more than 33 years with the Minneapolis Police Department, Gerlicher rose to deputy chief and helped coordinate public safety efforts for major events and emergencies. He later brought that experience to Minnetonka Public Schools, strengthening safety procedures, security systems and community partnerships to protect students and staff.
