On Thursday, June 6, the 71st graduating class of Minnetonka High School celebrated its commencement at US Bank Stadium. 

The program opened with “Pomp and Circumstance” as played by the MHS band and orchestra while just under 900 graduates entered the stadium, followed by a greeting from student emcees Jackson Klos and Molly O’Neill. The band and orchestra then played the national anthem.

Superintendent David Law welcomed graduates and their families, congratulating the Class of 2024 graduates for embracing opportunities throughout their years at Minnetonka and for the new paths that they have forged. 

“It has been my great pleasure and my privilege to experience Minnetonka Schools with you throughout your senior year,” Superintendent Law shared in his address. “I’ve had a front-seat view to watch you embrace the opportunities this school district provides and to learn about how you have forged new pathways with your interests and passions throughout your time in Minnetonka. It has been a humbling and powerful experience.”

Superintendent Law recognized students have challenged themselves and others to do their best and to make a difference. He also encouraged students to recognize and thank the families, teachers and friends who have supported them on their educational paths. “As you walk across the stage, recognize the path ahead of you has never been walked before,” said Superintendent Law. “It’s your personal journey—make it a great one!”

The audience enjoyed a live musical performance from students Emily Bodeau, Layla Ellingson, Kyra Martin and Julianna Velgersdyk who sang a rendition of “Landslide” by Stevie Nicks.

The Class of 2024 then heard remarks from student speaker Elias Grant and student-chosen faculty speaker Luke Boline. 

Grant reflected on the quote, “Your network is your net worth,” and the value that relationships and friendships bring to life in many different ways. “If your network really is your net worth, then I would be the richest man alive,” Grant reflected. “It’s the great connections and the great people [at Minnetonka High School] that make every day better than the last.”

Boline, a language arts instructor at Minnetonka High School, shared stories of facing adversity with hope and positivity. “On a daily basis, we all meet challenges that try us,” shared Boline. “It is how we greet those challenges that defines who we are and the lives that we lead.” As they prepare for what’s ahead, he encouraged the Class of 2024 to stop and cherish the time they have with friends, family and those they hold dear and to keep making “good mistakes” that are markers of progress.

The symphony orchestra and wind ensemble joined together to perform “Jupiter” from the Planets by Gustav Holst, directed by Sarah Finn-Sommerfeld and Kevin Kleindl. The concert choir then sang “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel, directed by Aaron Kohrs.

Minnetonka High School Principal Jeff Erickson formally recommended the class for graduation. “Seniors, all of us are here tonight because of you, and our singular focus is to celebrate you and honor you,” said Erickson. “Each of you has earned this moment.”
